Project summary

The Challenge

The healthcare sector in the EU generates approximately 2.5 million tonnes of waste annually, with less than 10% currently recycled. Driven by the European Green Deal and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the transition towards more circular healthcare systems is becoming increasingly urgent.

However, the adoption of circular solutions in MedTech remains limited. Strict requirements regarding sterility, patient safety, and certification create significant barriers. As a result, many sustainable alternatives are not implemented, despite their availability and potential impact.

The Solution & Holistic Approach

MEDI4Future (M4F) addresses these challenges by reducing waste in the MedTech sector through the adaptation of existing circular solutions to disposable medical products, including single-use devices, gloves, surgical gowns, and raw materials. The project spans 11 regions across North-West Europe’s established MedTech ecosystem.

M4F follows a transnational and modular approach, enabling stakeholders to implement circular practices without requiring disruptive regulatory changes or prohibitive certification costs. By fostering collaboration across highly specialised MedTech clusters, the project strengthens systemic capacity for circular transformation.

Key outputs include:

A Strategy and Action Plan for regional governments, BSOs, and RDAs to support circular transitions in MedTech (target: uptake in at least 15 NWE regions)

  • A toolbox for SMEs providing structured guidance for implementing circular business models
  • A capacity-building programme engaging at least 126 organisations across the region

These outputs are validated through 8 pilot actions with MedTech SMEs, ensuring practical relevance and impact. The project aims to demonstrate up to 50% waste reduction potential, showcasing the scalability of circular solutions across different industrial contexts.

By bridging sectoral fragmentation and enabling cross-regional collaboration, MEDI4Future creates a pathway for sustainable transformation within the regulatory realities of the MedTech industry.
